This immaculate hideaway in hip Fortitude Valley introduces authentic Northern Mexican cuisine to Brisbane. Owner Daniel Quinn has hired American chef Julio Aguilera – best known for his El Destilado restaurant in Oaxaca, Mexico – to consult on a menu of precisely prepared comfort food inspired by Baja California.

Aguilera’s creations include buffalo burrata with smoked-cashew salsa, fried cauliflower with fermented green chilli yoghurt and boneless chicken wings with a coriander and buttermilk dressing. It’s superb stuff best savoured with small-producer mezcal and tequila, served up in a beautiful, moodily lit venue of arched doorways, timber detailing and pink marble.

211 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley; (07) 3625 0069; open Tuesday to Saturday for dinner.
