How to Eat Your Way Around Japan
Discover hidden ramen bars, local delicacies and Michelin-starred restaurants on land and aboard with a Regent Seven Seas Cruises Tokyo round trip.
Take to the sea in style
1/9Dive into the unique culinary traditions of six Japanese ports and continue your gastronomic journey on board with Regent’s all-inclusive 11-night Blossoms Across Japan voyage (departing 14 March 2026). With capacity for 746 guests, Regent’s Seven Seas Explorer is an all-suite ship with a private balcony in every room, plus marble floors, crystal chandeliers and an impressive 2000-piece art collection that includes works by Pablo Picasso, Jakob Weidermann and Marc Chagall.
Elegance and attention to detail extends to the ship’s line-up of speciality restaurants, which includes pan-Asian eatery Pacific Rim, where you can try foie gras gyoza and lobster tempura, and Prime 7, a tribute to the American steakhouse that serves dry-aged New York strip steak, to name but a few.
The focus on gastronomy goes beyond dining, too, with chef-led cooking classes showcasing how to sear, slice, slice and sauté like a pro. Of course, no meal is complete without the perfect drop and the onboard wine pairing course lets you get better acquainted with Seven Seas Explorer’s cellar.
Explore Tokyo’s fine-diners
2/9Tokyo – where you’ll begin and end your journey – brims with award-winning restaurants alongside ancient cultural wonders. Before setting sail, take advantage of Regent’s pre- or post-cruise land programmes and you’ll be taken up Tokyo Tower to look out over the city from the 150-metre-high observation platform, before returning to earth and taking the helm of a hotplate for a traditional Japanese-style BBQ lunch in the city.
There’s also time to explore the capital’s famous food scene on your own. Tokyo is home to the most Michelin-starred restaurants in the world, including Sukiyabashi Jiro, a sushi restaurant in Ginza, Chūō. The 20-course omakase serves just 10 guests at a time and is where Japanese Prime Ministers and US Presidents have dined.
Immerse yourself in Shimizu
3/9Mount Fuji serves as a dramatic backdrop to the energetic port of Shimizu, southwest of Tokyo. Take in views of the snow-capped peak from the 17th-century Kunozan Toshogu Shrine. Back at sea level, the waterfront Kashi no Ichi seafood market is the city’s culinary heart, filled with colourful displays of the day’s catch. On a lunch stop at the covered market you’ll slurp the freshest oysters and enjoy a plate of sashimi or pink sakura shrimp – a local specialty. Afterwards, join a Regent excursion to a nearby green tea plantation, where you’ll learn to pick leaves and serve a perfect cup of the refreshing brew.

Enjoy a banquet in Kyoto
4/9The old imperial capital, southwest of Tokyo, is a vision of shrines, temples and lantern-lit doorways. Following Shimizu, guests will spend one night in Kyoto where they’ll be whisked away to a Regent-organised kaiseki-style dinner. The multi-course banquet is accompanied by a performance from the city’s famous geisha, who sing, dance and play instruments.
The region is also home to the city of Osaka, where you can visit one of Japan’s most famous landmarks, the tiered Osaka Castle. It’s also known as the street food capital so don’t miss sampling the tako tamago (skewered baby octopus stuffed with a quail egg) and taiyaki (fish-shaped cakes filled with custard or sweet bean paste). For something more hearty, pop into one of the city’s acclaimed Kobe restaurants for irresistibly marbled Kobe beef (Wagyu).
Knock back the best sake in Kochi
5/9Located on the edge of rugged Shikoku, the smallest of Japan’s four main islands, Kochi’s Pacific coastline has earned UNESCO Global Geopark status, thanks to its dramatic rock formations and the 175-million-year-old limestone caves of Ryugado. The region’s clean water and subtropical climate help make Kochi’s sake unique. The rice wine is best paired with a snack from one of the 60 or so vendors that crowd the central Hirome Market. Grab a plate of katsuo no tataki (seared bonito), known as the soul food of Kochi.

Try local delicacies in Hiroshima
6/9This city is mindful of its wartime past, as attested by the numerous memorials, including the Atomic Bomb Dome and the flickering Flame of Peace. After being razed in 1945, Shukkeien Garden, which was created as a 17th-century refuge for the nobleman Asano Nagaakira, has been restored with meticulously planned ponds, bridges and tea houses. You’ll work up an appetite walking the wide boulevards of the bustling city – a perfect excuse to sample the okonomiyaki, a savoury potato-and-cabbage pancake that locals layer with fried squid and noodles.
Surprise yourself in Nagasaki
7/9Taking in this city and its treasure trove of sights is best done from Mount Inasa. Regent’s excursion to Nagasaki Peace Park will get you there with a scenic drive. Back in town, street stalls dish out snacks, such as the French-influenced tonkatsu (crumbed, deep-fried pork cutlet) and in Japan’s oldest Chinatown, order the chanpon, a Chinese-influenced noodle dish with fried pork, seafood, vegetables and chicken and pork broth.
Soak up the delights of Beppu
8/9This hillside town on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu is home to naturally heated springs that bubble with mineral-rich water, plus heated sandpits and cleansing mud baths. The adjoining village of Kannawa, built on top of a boiling spring, is famous for its steam-plumed streets and a unique culinary style called “jigoku mushi” (which translates to “hell steaming”). Street food vendors serve items cooked over a hot spring, including soft-boiled eggs, sweet corn and pork dumplings.
