Sydney chef David Thompson is bringing his Thai street food restaurant to his hometown, writes Fiona Joy.

Slated for an August launch, Long Chim Sydney – which rides the successful coat tails of Long Chim restaurants in Singapore and Perth – will call 10 Martin Place home, with the main entrance on Angel Place. The 190-seat restaurant and bar will be set across several levels and Kelly Ross of The Gentry has been hired to oversee the interior design, said to include a large, open-plan kitchen and cocktail bar, with seating at private booths as well as communal-style tables.

It is not exactly one of the culinary world’s best-kept secrets, but the official confirmation has nonetheless been received with excitement as something of a homecoming for Thompson, who opened Sydney’s first upmarket Thai restaurant, Darley Street Thai, in St Peters in 1991 and his second, Sailors Thai, in the Rocks in 1995.

The arrival of Long Chim (translation: “come and taste”) will play a significant part in the overall revival of Martin Place, which the council is keen to turn into an alfresco dining destination in a bid to liven up the north end of the city. It also fits into a broader rejuvenation of George Street and Circular Quay, thanks to the $2 billion light rail project, expected to be completed in 2019.
