Queenland’s Hottest Under-the-radar Destination is Right on the Gold Coast
Even from the air it’s obvious change is afoot on the Gold Coast’s once-sleepy southern fringes. The shimmering views of sand and sea are punctuated by cranes and scaffolding, transforming these surfer haunts into a chic new frontier. Fresh on the scene is Coolangatta's Kirra Point, a Woods Bagot-designed beachside stay that looks out over the Pacific coast to the skyline of Surfers Paradise. One- to three-bedroom apartments, in pale neutrals that accentuate the blue sea and sky, come with every modern convenience, including access to a 25-metre pool and barbecue deck for sunrise and sunset views over north-facing Kirra Beach.
At street level, the reborn Kirra Beach Hotel brings fresh Miami vibes to the classic bistro-and-beer-garden combo or you can head upstairs to Kirra Beach House for Mediterranean menus in a choice of sophisticated spaces. There’s also a decent wine store onsite and a relaxed café, Made.
Right on the sand opposite, the old Pizza Hut is now Siblings, a pastel-tiled pavilion serving on-trend eats, “liquid journeys” (including Kirra-inspired cocktails) and luminous views. Nearby Billy Chow slings upscale Asian eats in stylish surrounds.
Wander down to the NSW border for coffee and snacks at newcomer Black Dingo Cafe, anchored on the edge of the Point Danger headland for optimum viewing of whales and waves. Steps away, on the first floor of the Awaken apartments at Rainbow Bay, Brisbane restaurateur John Gambaro has opened Pipi’s, a seafood-focused dining room (don’t miss the lobster linguine).
Beyond the glam new arrivals, the Gold Coast’s southern reaches remain as laid-back as ever. Old-school surf clubs, some of Australia’s best waves and sun-drenched days with family and friends still define the character of these charmed coastal communities.
