Thanks to sophisticated food and wine haunts as well as a rapidly growing arts and live-music scene, the “City of Churches” is more than just a stop-over if you’re on your way to one of South Australia’s renowned wine regions. What’s more, Adelaide’s compact CBD – a mere 20-minute drive from the airport – is home to some excellent hotels. Here’s where to stay in Adelaide.

Mayfair Hotel

Adelaide’s newest hotel (it opened in January 2015) is also its Art Deco darling. Housed in a beautifully renovated 1934 building, Mayfair Hotel offers 170 guestrooms, each with custom-designed locally made beds, double-glazed windows (to keep the CBD noise at bay), flat-screen TVs, touch-screen telephones, and rain showers and Appelles Apothecary amenities in the bathroom. There’s a compact 24-hour gym on level two, six function/meeting rooms with AV facilities as well as the subterranean Mayflower Restaurant and Bar. Award-winning chef Bethany Finn is at the restaurant’s helm, while colourful artworks by British painter Cate Parr adorn the walls. But what really makes Mayfair Hotel one of the best places to stay in Adelaide is its 13th-floor rooftop bar Hennessy, which offers two beautifully decorated rooms (with Versace chairs, plush velvet cushions, vast golden-framed mirrors and Art Deco-style chandeliers), as well as two outdoor sitting areas with city views.

Hilton Adelaide

Ask for a high-floor room facing Victoria Square and you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views, complete with historic buildings, church spires and the rolling Adelaide Hills in the distance. But whatever side of the building you end up on, chances are you won’t spend too much time in the room, thanks to a range of great on-site facilities at this centrally located hotel. Make your way to the ground-floor Collins Bar where mixologist Ammon Rogers serves up cocktails such as Smokin’ Tiki Punch – a decadent concoction of fresh passion fruit, apricot brandy and Angostura bitters – in a casual, relaxed and pleasantly uproarious setting. Follow that with a meal at the Coal Cellar + Grill, where you can order chef Daniel Fleming’s melt-in-your-mouth crab cakes with ras el hanout dressing as an entrée, beautifully charred tomahawk steaks for the main course and a salad of decidedly delicious sangria-marinated watermelon. But before you kick-off this flavoursome soirée, make sure to visit the hotel’s cellar – one of Adelaide’s largest restaurant cellars with more than 500 labels. Sommelier Atef Youssif will be on hand to help you pick wines that will perfectly match your food. It’s just one of the reasons that makes Hilton one of the best places to stay in Adelaide.

InterContinental Adelaide

When it comes to location, you can’t beat the InterContinental Adelaide hotel. Adelaide Railway Station and Adelaide Festival Centre are right next door, while Adelaide Oval is just across the River Torrens. So whether you’re in town for a mega match or celebrity concert, you are most likely only a short walk away from the venue if you’ve checked in at the InterContinental hotel. It is, after all, where Mick Jagger, Miley Cyrus and Oprah Winfrey like to stay when they’re in town. The hotel’s soaring atrium is surrounded by 367 luxuriously styled rooms and suites. Opt for one of the King Riverview Club rooms, which are located on the highest floors with uninterrupted city and Adelaide Hills views, and give you access to the Club InterContinental Lounge, with a complimentary deluxe hot breakfast in the morning, and canapés and a glass of wine at dusk. There are three eateries on site, from Riverside Restaurant (with two- or three-course pre-show table d’hôte menus) to Shiki, the award-winning Japanese den where chef Kenny Trinh plates up authentic teppanyaki-style fare.
