10 of the Best Winery Cellar Doors to Visit in Tasmania
Tasmania is a haven for good food and good wine – so how do you pick the best? Sample a few drops at these winery cellar doors near Hobart and beyond.
Josef Chromy
1/11Don't just do a tasting at Josef Chromy’s cellar door. Instead, spend quality time indulging in the fantastic two- or three-course lunch menu at the estate’s restaurant, which serves an upscale Modern Australian menu paired with local wines. Take a deep dive with the "Art of Sparkling" tour where you’ll discover the méthode traditionelle of Josef Chromy’s signature bubbles. The team will walk you through the winemaking and disgorging process before taking you into the laboratory to choose and add liqueur into the wine, resulting in your very own bottle of sparkling to take home. The experience ends with a two-course lunch at the restaurant, with Tasmanian wine, naturally.
Visiting this winter? Opt into one (or more) of Josef Chromy’s exclusive Off Season offerings, spanning executive chef Nick Raitt’s indulgent truffle-centric feast, a rustic five-course Tuscan banquet or a whisky degustation dinner in collaboration with Launceston Distillery.
Tasting fee: $20 per person.

2/11One of Tasmania’s first wineries, Moorilla had been creating stellar drops for more than three decades when art impresario David Walsh bought it in 1995. Located on the grounds of Mona (the winery came first), just outside Hobart, the brand’s old-world heritage has collided with the contemporary skill of winemaking wild child Conor van der Reest. Take your visit to the next level with the Moorilla "Fully Decanted" experience, where you’ll step into the estate’s underground wine bunker and taste rare drops under the guidance of one of Moorilla’s resident wine-savants after a stroll through the vineyard. You’ll get a discount on anything you purchase from the cellar door that day and take a complimentary bottle of wine home, too.
Tasting fee: $20 per person.

Alternatively, the "Wine, Wildlife and Vineyard" tour begins with a 45-minute guided tour through the vineyard accompanied by plenty of House of Arras wine, of course. At dusk, spot the local wildlife with binoculars as your guide points out wedge-tailed eagles, scarlet robins and platypus as they pass by.
If you're visiting in winter, House of Arras’ winter-only truffle hunt and vineyard tour with Pipers Brook Truffles is a must for food lovers. Guests will follow the vineyard’s two working dogs on a guided truffle hunt around two of Tasmania’s Premier Agricultural properties and try their hand at vine pruning. The reward?
