David Walsh’s stunning private gallery – a concrete and iron bunker in a hitherto unfashionable suburb north of Hobart’s CBD – set the art world alight when it opened to the public in 2011. Carved deep into sandstone cliffs on Berriedale’s peninsula, the architecture itself is world class but it’s the rumoured $100 million dollars worth of private art that woos people. Grab your iPod and headset (there are no written descriptions) and explore. It could be Sidney Nolan’s enormous mosaic Snake that takes your fancy. Or an ancient mummy displayed in a room so disturbingly dark that you feel like you’re going to fall into a lake. There’s also a Porsche sculpted by Austria’s Erwin Wurm, a popular piece. While themes of death and sex certainly abound, there’s something to love here for all tastes.
