Magabala Books – a store and small publisher – focuses on the rich tradition of storytelling among Australia’s Indigenous people. The recipient of ABIA’s award for Small Publisher of the Year in 2020, Magabala publishes works by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander authors and artists from all over the country, spanning children’s books (including Bruce Pascoe’s Young Dark Emu), graphic novels and poetry (such as Blakwork by Alison Whittaker). 

Find accommodation at Cable Beach

Eccentric developer, collector and political fundraiser (and noted Australophile) Lord Alistair McAlpine opened Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa in 1988. The low-rise, timber-and-iron resort bucked the trend of shiny high-rises being erected in Australia’s other tropical Edens. McAlpine filled his resort with Australian and Asian furniture and art, spending $55 million to realise his dream in the remote and obscure town. Now, there are 234 incredible rooms and suites (opt for the Nolan Suite, which is filled with McAlpine-era Sidney Nolan artworks), poolside villas and bungalows, as well as a spa, pools and the Sunset Bar & Grill, a Broome institution overlooking Cable Beach and its sunset camel trains. 

See the work of local artists

With generous brushstrokes and vibrant colours, artist Emma Blyth has been painting the stunning Kimberley landscape for more than 20 years. At the Black Stump Gallery, Blyth’s works are exhibited along with those of other local artists for whom the striking environment of Western Australia and a deep connection to the land serve as inspiration. 

The best coffee

With its cheerful red doors and ample outdoor seating, Dragonfly Cafe (3/6 Carnarvon Street, Broome) is the place to go for excellent coffee and great Aussie breakfasts (read: plenty of avocado and the obligatory corn fritter).

The best brewery

It’s known for its sweet and spicy Chango (that’s chilli and mango) beers but Matso’s Broome Brewery also does delicious bar snacks. Try the Slow Death wings (“probably the hottest wings in Australia,” says the menu) if you’re brave.

The best modern Asian

There’s plenty of top Asian food in Broome but for a special meal, try The Aarli, with its menu of bold flavours – think crisp fried calamari.
