Hike at Serpentine Falls
A day spent on the walking the trails in Serpentine National Park is invigorating for the body and good for the soul.
DO Birdlife abounds, lizards bake in the sun and grey kangaroos graze near picnicking families. In spring wildflowers bloom and bring a blaze of colour to the area, while winter sees the waters of the Serpentine River in full flow. It’s not hard to see why the area has been a favourite getaway for Perth locals for almost a century.
The Serpentine Falls are an easy 15-minute walk so if you’re looking for a tougher challenge hit the Baldwins Bluff Nature Track. The six-kilometre walk passes through jarrah and marri woodlands and has spectacular views looking over the valley. And if you really want to stretch your legs, there’s the 14-kilometre Kitty’s Gorge Walk Track. Just make sure your done on the trail before the park gates close at 5pm.
EAT AND DRINK Before hitting the road stop at the Boatshed in Cottesloe to pull together the ingredients for a picnic hamper. Their rotisserie chicken, while small, is the best value and best tasting in the city and their kofta and salads are consistently great. Fuel up for the day ahead in South Fremantle with a big breakfast at Ootong & Lincoln – the smashed avocado with fetta and quinoa is a must.
GET THERE The Serpentine National Park is an hour’s drive south-east of Perth. Head direct to the carpark at the Serpentine Falls Picnic Area; it’s the best place to get on the walking trails.
