6 of the Best Places to Eat and Drink in Northbridge
When archaeologist Philip Koch arrived in Australia in 2016 from northern Italy, his life took an unexpected detour. Though he’d always worked part-time as a waiter, he started digging into a new world of hospitality as the venue manager at Wines of While in Perth's inner-city. Koch has infused his European sensibility into the acclaimed small wine bar and store, which is known for its long and thoughtful drinks list and tight food menu (think duck and black truffle rillettes or clams with coriander and lemon). Here, he shares his pick of the best restauarants and bars in Northbridge.
Shadow Wine Bar for the cotoletta
1/7“This restaurant is one of the most beautiful spaces in town and anything that comes out of the kitchen is delicious. There’s always fresh pasta – maybe spaghettini with crab – and the beef cotoletta is brilliant. The wine list is great and has a European focus. It isn’t on the menu but manager Emma will make you a Sazerac cocktail, which includes rye whiskey or cognac, if you ask.”
Vincent Wine for traditional French fare
2/7“Sometimes I like to go to this fantastic French bistro on my break. The menu changes but leans towards the traditional, such as caviar, steak frites and French onion soup. I’ve had the best escargot with garlic and parsley butter here. The sommelier, Rahuul Prasad, is fantastic – his wine list is great and he’s so knowledgeable.”
Fortune Five for the Shanghai dumplings
3/7“I like the ‘naughty corner’ at Fortune Five, the last table at the end of the room. I come here with hospitality friends and BYO wines and spend hours over yum cha. Grab the salt and pepper squid tentacles, steamed chicken feet and all the dumplings. The Shanghai soup dumplings in particular are delicious.”
Astral Weeks for music and guest chefs
4/7“This is a super-edgy venue with phenomenal acoustics so I think of it as a ‘listening bar’. I order a dry gin Martini and just nest in the cosy space for the night. They have amazing events, including DJs and guest winemakers. Well-known Perth chefs sometimes also do snap takeovers of the kitchen.”
No Mafia for pasta
5/7“Spend an afternoon here people-watching, drinking aperitivos and having some snacks – perhaps arancini or house-pickled octopus. The pastas are good, too – I’ve had spaghetti vongole but they also do spaghetti with prawn butter and bottarga, as well as a duck pappardelle.”
Picabar for an afternoon beer
6/7“This is an iconic spot next to the Perth Cultural Centre in a beautiful old building – it used to be a 19th-century boys’ school. The beer garden has a great vibe and it’s where locals and students go for a pint of Swan Draught and a burger or steak.
