The Culture Lover's Guide to Frankfurt
There's plenty to keep you entertained in between meetings in Frankfurt, especially if you're a culture lover. By Michelle Margherita.
Culture fix
On the southern embankment of the Main River is the Museumsufer, a boulevard of nine museums that are bumper to bumper. If you only have an hour, spend it wisely in one of Germany’s best fine-arts museums, the Städel, where the collection spans 700 years, from old masters to contemporary works, over four floors.
Gourmet bites
For a truly local experience, go to the lively Kleinmarkthalle in the Altstadt. This bustling food market sells everything from cured meats and cheeses to fresh vegetables and local wine. Grab a coffee at Frankfurter Kaffeerösterei, try jamón Ibérico at the Spanische Tapas Arkade or head upstairs for seafood at Franco’s Austernbar.
Green Oasis
Not far out of the city centre in Westend-Süd is the Palmengarten, a botanical refuge that’s just as beautiful in snowy winter as it is in summer. Potter about the subtropical greenhouses before enjoying lunch at Michelin-starred Restaurant Lafleur.
Old to new
An afternoon is all you need to explore the cobblestoned streets of the Altstadt. Start at Römerberg town square to see medieval architecture that either survived World War II bombing or has been painstakingly restored. Don’t miss the giant Euro-Skulptur in the park at Willy-Brandt-Platz. North of the Altstadt, wander along well-heeled Goethestraße for designer shopping.
Cider house
A trip to Frankfurt must include drinking ebbelwoi (cider) so head to Lorsbacher Thal tavern in Sachsenhausen for bembels (traditional ceramic jugs) of apple wine.
