The view of Barcelona from Park Güell is one of the most popular photos you’ll see of the city: with whimsical Casa del Guarda in the foreground it looks a bit like you’ll be stepping into the pages of a Dr Seuss book. Gaudi was commissioned by a successful entrepreneur, Eusebi Güell, to create this fantastical and flamboyant art-meets-park estate, which was once a private residence and is now a public garden and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is really, really busy and it will be hard to get a photo without crowds of other people in it. But, it’s also like nothing else in this world and is worth a visit. The general gardens area is free, but the bits you really want to see are inside what is referred to as the Monumental Zone. Avoid the queues and buy online ahead of time.

Location

While centrally located in modern day Barcelona, Gràcia used to be its own town and still retains a tight-knit, neighbourhood feel. Wander around to discover cool boutiques and laidback restaurants and bars. Park Güell is located in the La Salut neighbourhood of Gràcia and the closest metro stop is Vallcarca.
