The Modern Honolulu – Hotel Review
While neighbouring Waikiki resorts spruik their own version of tropical chic, The Modern Honolulu’s brand of sleek, art-inspired minimalism offers a distinctively fresh alternative. Read on for the full review.
Fronting the marina just north of Waikiki Beach proper, the hotel’s short (but noticeable) distance from the ever-bustling shore is somewhat of a blessing, especially when you’re stretched out on the quiet deck of the Sunrise Pool area. It’s a great choice for travellers longing for a low-key stay that’s still within reach of the busy beachfront.
Where is The Modern Honolulu?
The Modern straddles the Ala Wai Boat Harbor, about a 10-minute drive north of the centre of Waikiki Beach. It’s approximately 20 minutes by car from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.
What’s near The Modern Honolulu?
The north end of Waikiki Beach, known as Kahanamoku Beach, is less than 10 minutes walk away, past the Hilton Lagoon. Fort DeRussy Beach Park, a less crowded stretch backed by a green foreshore, is a few minutes further on. The shopping strips and malls of Waikiki are about 5 minutes’ drive away.

The hotel’s minimalism comes into full effect in the simple guest rooms. Blonde wood furniture with platform-style king beds, chalk-white walls and clean white linen daybeds feel fresh and catch the sun as it streams in through floor-to-ceiling windows and balconies behind sliding teak slatted screens. Amenities are a similar mix of functional and chic — there are Keurig coffee makers, slippers and robes and, as a cute local touch, a ukulele.
Restaurants and bars
The Grove Restaurant + Bar is the property’s sole eatery, with tables set atmospherically under a canopy of autograph trees next to the swimming area. It’s open from 7am so guests can go from waffles to tacos.
Travel for work
All rooms and suites have full-sized desks, with wi-fi.
Spa, gym and pool
There are two pools: the galaxy-blue circular adults-only Sunset Pool and the Sunrise Pool, surrounded by a decked and lounger area with views of the marina that feels more Mediterranean than Hawaiian. There’s a 24-hour fitness centre and staff can also share local running routes to get you out and about. At the time of writing, the on-site spa was temporarily closed.
Sustainability
Smart technology effectively harnesses the hotel’s sustainability efforts. In common spaces, natural light is used for energy efficiency, while air conditioning is only triggered once a guest checks into their room (and turns off automatically when balcony doors slide open). Eco-friendly amenities are stocked in the bathrooms and you won’t find a plastic straw anywhere on the premises.
Accessibility
There are city and ocean view rooms available to guests who require accessibility, with features such as roll-in showers, lowered light switches and closet shelves, plus bathroom grab bars.
