Few museum openings were met with such fervent anticipation as the Whitney, which decamped from its Upper East Side digs to the Meatpacking District in mid-2015. Thankfully, the repository of 20th and 21st century American art wears its new, Renzo Piano-designed digs quite well. Free, near-daily tours will help you navigate the huge, airy space perched on the Hudson River and families should take advantage of the weekend’s “open studio” art projects and sketching tours for kids. Who knows? You could have a mini Hopper or Abramović on your hands.

Location

The Meatpacking District is home to dozens of high-end boutiques and exclusive clubs (DiCaprio, Rihanna and sports stars are often seen partying here until the weekend’s wee hours). But it also proffers plenty of calmer activities, thanks to the above-ground park The High Line and the new Whitney Museum.
