Samantha Wills' New York Tips
From a Bondi Beach market stall to the streets of New York, jewellery designer Samantha Wills has become one of Australia’s biggest exports. Her luxe bohemian accessories have been worn by Kate Bosworth, Drew Barrymore and Eva Mendes, with each piece beautifully designed in her Meatpacking District loft. Here, she shares her top spots to eat, drink and play in the city that never sleeps.
The best hotel
Before I lived in New York, I would stay at The Bowery Hotel every chance I could. Depending on your budget, ask for the suite with the hot outdoor shower overlooking the bright lights of the city.
Book a table at
There are so many! I’m going to go with an old favourite, Buddakan NYC. Order the edamame dumplings, they will change your life. If you are after something a little more quaint, I love Malaparte in the West Village, which serves amazing fresh coastal Italian food. If you can get a reservation, I would also recommend ABC Kitchen.
Favourite breakfast spot
The Standard in the Meatpacking District do a great breakfast. Brunch is the thing to do in NYC and most New Yorkers are not awake for breakfast. Café Cluny in the West Village is a good brunch spot (and for celebrity spotting), while another favorite is the Waverly Inn.
For boutique shopping
I like Intermix for its great selection of daywear and nightwear and Aritzia, a Canadian boutique that has some awesome things. Also be sure to check out the Aussies doing it right Stateside, with Sass & Bide and Zimmermann both in SoHo.
The top experience
Walking the High Line at sunset is pretty spectacular. If you are visiting during summer, be sure to check out Gallow Green, a cabin-themed rooftop bar overgrown with greenery. Catching a Yankees or Knicks game is also a surreal experience in NYC.
Don't leave NYC without
Grabbing a pretzel or hotdog from a street vendor. It is New York after all.
