Elizabeth Abegg and Isabella Pennefather are the Melbourne-born sisters behind the hippie-luxe label Spell Designs. Seven years after they began selling their wares at the Byron Bay markets they have mastered the sort of floaty, boho pieces that turn music festivals into fashion shows. The sisters count among their ardent fans starlets such as Miley Cyrus, Vanessa Hudgens and Margot Robbie and their only retail store, on Byron’s Browning Street, is a revolving door of It girls. Abegg tells us that when the sisters aren’t away on exotic fashion shoots, there’s nowhere they’d rather be than in their adopted hometown. She shares some of their regular haunts.

Our favourite breakfast spot

“The Roadhouse Café is a go-to. It’s often busy but worth the wait for the amazing coffee or chai with turmeric! It’s a place you should go to sit under the palm trees and enjoy the outside dining. They have a lovely chia bowl and they always have really good specials, too.”

The best shopping precinct for boutique fashion

“If you walk the stretch of Fletcher Street between Lawson and Marvell there are some great boutiques. Our favourites are Ahoy Trader, Island Luxe Tribe, Hope & May and Rowie. You can find a mix of contemporary and lovely local brands.“

The best area for vintage fashion

“There are vintage gems peppered all around Byron Bay, including a few in the Arts & Industry Estate. Our favourites are Mr Vintage, Trash and Miss Brown Vintage. They’ve always got new wonderful vintage pieces coming in.”

One shop you can’t miss is…

“Our brand new Spell store on Browning Street! It is just a five-minute walk from the main street and a real destination experience. We have a little courtyard, which we open on sunny weekends so partners have somewhere to sip their coffee while you shop – win-win.”

The best place for a fashionable find

“Head to the markets on the first Sunday of every month. It does attract a tourist crowd, but not in a bad way. There’s lots of live music and it really caters to people who want to come and experience Byron Bay. We have a special place in our hearts for that market because it’s where our label started.”

The best beauty spot to indulge

“Head to Kiva Spa, which is set in luscious tropical gardens in Mullumbimby, for the most relaxing spa experience. The sauna there is the best I have ever experienced; it’s a wooden dome with a fireplace in it and smells of eucalyptus. They’ve also got a new steam room, too.”

End the day with a drink

“You can view a beautiful sunset at The Balcony on Jonson Street. Book one of the lounges outside on the verandah and try their signature Cauliflower Popcorn. I also really enjoy the lychee martinis.”
