See Inside the Luxurious Thai Hotels From ‘The White Lotus’ Season Three
Any fan of streaming sensation The White Lotus knows its filming locations are crucial characters. In series one, the shores of Hawaii served as the backdrop for the show’s charged interactions. Then, it was the cliff-clinging villages of Italy that gave series two a palpable sense of drama. Now, Thailand is set to take centre stage in the highly-anticipated third season.
If you haven’t heard of Koh Samui – the east coast island of icing sugar sand and lazy palms in the Gulf of Thailand – or the haven of Phuket, you’re about to. Here are some of the incredible Thai hotels you’ll spot in the latest season of The White Lotus.
The hotel: Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort
1/13On the edge of its namesake beach of Bophut, this relaxed resort is nestled into the north-east corner of the island and looks out over glittering waters. Set on a former coconut plantation, the property’s gardens are lush and shady, with towering palms and various monkey statues that nod to the area’s cheekiest residents.
The rooms
2/13If you want to be close to nature during your stay, it hardly matters which room you’re staying in. Across all of the 106 rooms and suites, the resort's gardens are within reach through picture windows and from balconies, while hardwood floors and high ceilings keep the buzzing heat at bay. Opt for a suite and you can be even closer, with a private outdoor courtyard space fringed by palms.
The highlight: The Thai-style lobby
3/13Hotel lobbies have always played a crucial role in White Lotus plot development and season three is no different. It’s the real-life lobby space at Anantara Bophut Koh Samui that you’ll see the stars orbiting around; the surrounding green spaces feature lotus ponds and emerald green stands of bamboo.
The hotel: Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort
4/13Some villas at this beachfront haven on the island’s eastern beach of Chaweng channel the charm of a peaceful fishing village, while others recall historic shopfronts. No matter where you’re stationed at Anantara Lawana Koh Samui, relaxation is a given. With no less than six eateries (all of them open to the elements), you’ll see plenty of Thailand’s natural beauty without ever leaving the grounds.
The rooms
5/13There are 122 rooms and even the smallest is a spacious 55 square-metres but if you splash out on one of the 44 suites you’ll have your own private plunge pool. Swimming at the resort’s main pool has its own benefits: you’ll see staff wandering around handing out fresh fruit and iceblocks for guests to enjoy.
The highlight: The Singing Bird Lounge
6/13Tense conversations seem to unfold at hotel bars in every season of The White Lotus. Here, under the branches of a gracefully gnarled 120-year-old tree is The Singing Bird Lounge, one of the resort’s most atmospheric settings. This season, expect to see bartenders shake up beverages named for the native birds that populate the surrounding trees as characters meet up and the plot thickens.
The hotel: Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas
7/13Rainforested Phuket has long been synonymous with blissful getaways. At Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas guests have the best of Thailand’s largest island at their fingertips, with verdant gardens and serene waterways providing a soothing soundtrack to every activity. Our advice? Let your days follow an easy rhythm and bounce between seaside and spa.
The rooms
8/13Family holidays are made for Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas. Colourful, sun-drenched suites are made for four or more, with the smallest stretching over 94 square-metres, while pool villas start from a generous 186 square-metres, with courtyard spaces of plunge pools, outdoor bathtubs and showers.
The highlight: The spa
9/13Ringed by a lagoon, the resort’s wellness space captures true tranquillity as much with its setting as its juice cleanses and ayurvedic treatments. The location for several scenes in the series, this sprawling spa houses steam rooms, a nail salon and even outdoor bathtubs.
The hotel: Four Seasons Koh Samui
10/13Surrounded by mature palm trees and sweeping vistas of the Gulf of Thailand, the 60 beachfront villas of the Four Seasons Koh Samui Resort are gloriously tranquil, each with their own private infinity plunge pool and ocean-facing deck.
The dining
11/13Previous seasons of The White Lotus have placed a lot of action in the hotel’s eateries, so expect drama to unfold as characters sample authentic cuisine at the Koh Thai Kitchen or locally sourced seafood at the Pla Pla restaurant, followed by a nightcap at the Koh Bar or the in-house Rum Vault.
The highlight: the pool
12/13Filming is bound to take advantage of the hotel’s communal ocean-facing infinity pool, which is served by its own bar, the CoCoRum. Rum fans will be particularly interested in this place: it's home to Asia's first and only rum library.
