Neuschwanstein Castle, Bavaria, Germany
Germany's Neuschwanstein was based on King of Bavaria Ludwig II's medieval romanticism and admiration for the works of Richard Wagner. He began building the castle in this remote and idyllic part of Bavaria to hide from the world. Shortly after being deposed in 1886, Ludwig died under mysterious circumstances at Lake Starnberg. His palace was immediately opened to the public and was the inspiration for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle.
