Day one

This stretch of the bigger Northern Forage road trip begins with two days around Stanley, a picture-perfect fishing village nestled at the base of a rocky bluff called The Nut. Scale the ancient volcanic plug (or take the chairlift) for panoramic views of the windswept coastline before heading to Godfreys Beach to watch little penguins waddling home at dusk. For dinner, don’t miss sweetly luscious local rock lobster from Hursey Seafoods. Retire for the night to the Ship Inn, a luxuriously converted sailor’s tavern dating back to 1849.

Day two

It’s an hour’s scenic drive to the Woolnorth property where dairy cows roam and giant windmills wave their arms in this region’s roaring forties winds. Brave the bluster with Woolnorth Tours, an Aboriginal-run operation with exclusive access to the rugged bluff of Cape Grim. Catch lungfuls of what is officially the world’s cleanest air (it’s measured by the nearby Baseline Air Pollution Station).

Day three

Gardiner Point Edge of the World, Tasmania

Drive south to wonder at savage waves thundering ashore at Marrawah’s Green Point Beach; 15 minutes onward you’ll be stunned by the glassy calm on a cruise of the Arthur River. Detour down a gravel road near the tiny Arthur River township to stand on the Edge of The World: this is the starting point for the longest uninterrupted expanse of ocean on earth. Tuck into a famed Cape Grim rib eye before bed at Tall Timbers in Smithton.

Day four

How’s this for a finale? The 60 kilometre-long Tarkine Drive loop tracks ancient myrtle forests and limestone sinkholes in Australia’s largest cool-climate rainforest.
