“How I Travel” With Travel Writer Georgia Hopkins

Georgia Hopkins

Swapping a corporate gig for life on the road, the travel writer and adviser is based in Athens. The place that calls her back home? Noosa.

When you’re in Australia, where do you spend your time?

I’m from Melbourne but I’ve had family holidays in Noosa since I was a toddler. Now my sister lives there so I visit almost every time I’m back. The thing that never changes is its natural beauty. The beaches are pristine.

Where do you go for a bite there?

Humble on Duke

Humble on Duke is in nearby Sunshine Beach, it’s run by amazing women and the food is interesting. For a special experience, there’s a Japanese place in Noosa Junction called Sushi Kuon with a set menu – it’s pricey but worth it.

What about a Sunday session?

Seabourne Distillery

Seabourne Distillery in Noosaville for local gin infused with native botanicals.

And the best place to stay?

Halse Lodge

Noosa has a tonne of cute holiday rentals. My favourite is Shack Palace, a cabin on a hill with amazing views. And I’m looking forward to staying at the newly reopened Halse Lodge. There’s a restaurant and bar and the vibes promise to be good.

Are you a last-minute packer or a pre-planner?

I’m a last-minute girl – sometimes the morning of. I’m an overpacker but I’m getting slightly better at wearing most of the things I bring with me at least once.

Once you’re there, do you follow an itinerary or wing it?

I always do a lot of research because part of my work with It’s Beautiful Here is building itineraries for clients. But my best travel experiences have come from the unexpected. I like to rack up thousands of steps wandering a new city.

Speaking of which, if you could only bring one pair of shoes, what would it be?

Hereu Loafers

I have never only brought one pair of shoes but it would have to be my Hereu loafers. They’re comfortable and go from day to night.

What app do you rely on when you’re away?

Shazam. I build a playlist from every place I visit.
