What are your favourite Barossa varietals?

While shiraz reigns supreme, old Barossa favourites include grenache and mataro. Barossa cabernet sauvignon – especially in a cooler year – can also create its own magic.

What’s your go-to restaurant in the Barossa region?

For casual dining, I like the communal menu at Harvest Kitchen at Artisans of Barossa. For something a little smarter, FermentAsian has wonderfully creative South-East Asian cuisine – and what a wine list!

Is there a hidden gem in the Barossa?

Casa Carboni (reopening August 10) in Angaston is always popular with the Penfolds winemaking team, especially for a weekend coffee. Try its Italian cooking school, which includes a visit to the Barossa Farmers Market. Or if you’re time-challenged, pick up a bottle of their olive oil as a souvenir.

What are some must-do activities?

Definitely have a Schulz bacon-and-egg roll at Barossa Farmers Market on Saturday morning. The cellar doors at Hentley Farm and Yalumba are also at the top of the list. Have lunch at 1918 Bistro & Grill in Tanunda then share some rare and often ancient fortified gems at Seppeltsfield to wind up a blissful day.
